Tender and cruise pier information
Geiranger is primarily a tender port. Larger cruise ships anchor in Geirangerfjord and use tender boats to transfer passengers to the village landing. Smaller vessels may berth at the Geiranger SeaWalk — a floating pier that extends from the village dock over the fjord.
Either way, you arrive in the compact village centre with shops, cafés, and excursion meeting points within walking distance. Confirm your ship's arrangement on the cruise app the night before arrival.
Walking distances from the landing
- Village centre and harbour: immediate — you land in the heart of Geiranger
- Tourist information: in the village centre, walkable from tender and SeaWalk landings
- Excursion meeting points: typically signed locations near the harbour within 2–5 minutes on foot
- Flydalsjuvet viewpoint: requires road transport — not walkable on a port call
- Mount Dalsnibba: 38 km by road — coach excursion only
Tourist information and facilities
Visitor services, ATMs, pharmacies, and cafés cluster around the village centre and harbour. Restrooms and shelter are available near tourist information and shopping areas. Most excursion operators meet guests at signed locations near the harbour — check your voucher for the exact meeting point.
Local transport
Geiranger village is compact and walkable, but every major excursion requires road transport up steep mountain passes or boat transport on the fjord. Coach and minibus tours are the practical route to Dalsnibba, Eagle Road, and fjord sightseeing. Taxis are scarce — do not rely on them for mountain transfers without a pre-arranged booking.
Currency and payments
Norway uses Norwegian kroner (NOK). Contactless cards are accepted almost everywhere, including cafés and souvenir shops. Some smaller stalls may prefer cash — withdraw kroner from ATMs in the village if needed.
Weather on cruise days
Geiranger sits at the head of a deep fjord surrounded by steep cliffs. Summer can be mild but changeable; mountain viewpoints like Dalsnibba and Eagle Road are exposed to cloud and wind. Pack a light rain layer and windproof jacket — clear days reward early disembarkation with the best photography.
